Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF)

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) is a long-period comet discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility. During its 2023 apparition, the comet developed a bright green coma caused by diatomic carbon emission, along with a structured dust tail and a narrow ion tail. This image shows the comet before its passage near the Sun, when the coma was still compact and the tail structures were clearly visible. With an orbital period of roughly 50,000 years, the comet will not return for many millennia.
