HCG 92, better known as Stephan’s Quintet, is one of the most famous compact galaxy groups
in the night sky. Located in the constellation Pegasus, the group consists of five galaxies,
four of which are physically interacting. The fifth member, NGC 7320, is a foreground galaxy
and not part of the main interacting system.
The interacting galaxies show dramatic tidal distortions, shock fronts, and large-scale
streams of material created by high-velocity collisions. Deep imaging reveals extensive
diffuse halos and complex structures surrounding the group.
