Caldwell 55, known as the Saturn Nebula, is a bright planetary nebula in the
constellation Aquarius. Its distinctive appearance, with extended ansae resembling the
rings of Saturn, makes it one of the most recognizable planetary nebulae. The nebula is
illuminated by a hot central star that is shedding its outer layers as it evolves toward
the white dwarf stage.
