Trumpler 16

Trumpler 16
Trumpler 16 (Tr 16) is a massive open cluster located in the central region of the Carina Nebula. It is best known for containing the extremely luminous and unstable star Eta Carinae, whose powerful stellar winds and eruptions have shaped the surrounding nebula. Modern Gaia-based measurements place Tr 16 at a distance of about 2.4 kpc (approximately 7,800 light-years). With an estimated age of around 3 million years, Tr 16 is older than the nearby cluster Trumpler 14, yet still young in astronomical terms. The cluster contains several hot O-type stars and forms a key part of the Carina OB1 association.
• Trumpler 14 (northern part of the Carina Nebula)
• Trumpler 15 (slightly further east, above Tr 16)
• Trumpler 16 (central, around Eta Carinae itself)
